The Letter Arc

  • Letter arcs help children:

    • See and understand letter shapes in 3D

    • Learn how letters are sequenced

    • Recognise that letters, like people, have names and can also make sounds

Letter Names & Sounds

Letters have two jobs, and it’s important not to mix them up.

  • Letter names are what we call the letters (A, B, C…).
We use letter names when spelling, talking about letters, and learning the alphabet.

  • Letter sounds are the sounds the letters make when we read (a as in ant, b as in bat).
We use letter sounds when reading and sounding out words.

It’s very common for children to confuse letter names and sounds — this is part of the learning process.
On this worksheet, we will exlain the difference between the two and when to use them
