Letter Names & Sounds
Letters have two jobs, and it’s important not to mix them up.

Letter names are what we call the letters (A, B, C…).
We use letter names when spelling, talking about letters, and learning the alphabet. -
Letter sounds are the sounds the letters make when we read (a as in ant, b as in bat).
We use letter sounds when reading and sounding out words.
It’s very common for children to confuse letter names and sounds — this is part of the learning process.
