Find the Right Starting Point for Your Child’s Literacy
Your child’s learning journey starts here.
Why The Letter Arc Comes First
Strong literacy foundations help children feel confident and capable.
Everything your child learns next builds on these early skills.
The letter arc helps children:
• See and understand letter shapes
• Learn how letters are sequenced
• Understand that letters have names and also make sounds
Children usually benefit from learning letter names first, before moving on to sounds.
Our short video and simple worksheets show you exactly how to practise this at home.
When You’re Ready to Find the Right Starting Point
Once you feel confident about letter names and letter sounds, you can use the pathway check below.
This will help you gently identify the right place for your child to begin.

Before You Begin the Pathway Check
Please follow these simple steps:
- Read each word aloud.
- Do not show your child the word.
- Your child writes the word down.
- Say the word in a sentence if context is needed.
- If every word is correct, move to the next group.
- If one word is incorrect, this is your starting point.
Take your time. There is no rush. You are simply finding the right place to begin.
